[REVIEW] Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Rating: 3/5

Hello reader friends! I just finished the grand adventure of the second installment of the Red Queen series and overall, it was a pleasant read.

THOUGHTS…

Okay, some of you that adored this book may be wondering “why in the world did you give this book a THREE out of FIVE?!” and let me just state that I really enjoyed the first book in the series a lot and expected quite a bit… ‘more’ when it came to Glass Sword and I will explain what I mean and why. Again, in this review, there may be some SPOILERS (I try to not name any characters that go through pivotal moments as I explain them or go into too much detail about important events that take place in the book) so I suggest that if you have not read this book yet and do not want to accidentally stumble upon the events that unfold, leave this page and come back later to let me know what your thoughts are and if they differ from mine, I would love to know your opinion!

  • “PRAISE”: As I said before, Red Queen was such a joy for me to read, it reminded me of a few other books that I had read in the past (that I loved), but it still had its own story that drew me in right away. Victoria Aveyard does an AMAZING job at describing scenes that make you feel as if you’re actually there. Just like the first book, this one (Glass Sword) is read in a first person perspective, so essentially you always get the point of view of the main character, Mare Barrow. Mare changes a lot and you can sort of see where and why she changes and be with her as she develops as a character.
    • “CRITICISM”: Here’s where I tell you what I didn’t care for too much in the book. First of all, although I love Mare Barrow’s perspective, I felt as if in this book, she wasn’t a very likable character anymore, she was very wishy-washy, it was as if she couldn’t decide between putting herself down or wanting to hurt everyone else around her. The character just turned into someone I didn’t particularly agree with (in my opinion – you may think otherwise). As I read through, it seemed that none of the other characters really grew, and if they did, it was only slightly. Aveyard is an incredible writer, don’t get me wrong, this one book however, was just not one of my favorites. It felt as if the whole second book was sort of setting up for the third one, which is definitely essential,  just not as fun to read.
  • “OKAY WHAT”: Where Aveyard totally threw me off was when she killed off two characters – not very big characters, but enough to get the heart strings tugged just a little bit. There was a certain death that occurred where I felt she could have gone into more depth about, it felt very sudden and there wasn’t a whole lot of discussion about it afterwards, but since it was more towards the end of the book, I’m hoping the death takes on a bigger role about those affected by it in the third book, King’s Cage.

Overall, I did enjoy myself while reading Glass Sword and am very much looking forward to the third (though I’m not sure if final) book to the Red Queen series. I have not started it yet because I am reading various other books for BookTube-A-Thon and I am proud to say that I am keeping up quite well! But King’s Cage is on the TBR list for BookTube-A-Thon so I will be reading it and reviewing it shortly, along with all of the others. I may not write my reviews for all of them until next week, but I have PLENTY of notes.

P.S. My next review will be on Heartless by Marissa Meyer and it’s going to be in EXTREME depth, so keep a look out for that, as it will coming soon! xx
